Tom Wine, Recipient Of The KCDA Harry Robert Wilson Lifetime Achievement Award

Tom Wine, Chair of Music Education and Director of Choirs at Wichita State University, received the Harry Robert Wilson award from the Kansas Choral Director’s Association. The award was presented at the All-State Men’s and All-State Women’s choir concert at Grace Episcopal Cathedral in Topeka as part of the 2016 KCDA Summer Convention. It is given annually to one outstanding KCDA member for lifetime achievement and contributions to the field of choral music. Dr. Wine was chosen for his excellence in choral music training, performance and scholarship as well as his commitment and contributions to choral music in the state of Kansas.

Dr. Wine has been the recipient of the WSU President’s Distinguished Service Award as well as the Wichita Arts Council’s Burton Pell Award for outstanding contributions to music education.  He is past-president of Kansas Choral Directors Association and editor of the book, Composers on Composing for Choir. Under his direction, the WSU Madrigal Singers and A Cappella Choir have appeared at the KMEA in-service workshop on nine different occasions in addition to a Carnegie Hall appearance in 2009. Wine has conducted district and All-state choirs in Kansas, Florida, Oklahoma, Missouri, Alabama, and South Carolina. His choral arrangements are published with Hal Leonard.  Wine is a frequent presenter for state and regional conventions of both ACDA and NAfME.  On three different occasions he led choirs on trips to Europe with the Kansas Ambassadors. As choir teacher at Spartanburg High School in South Carolina, he was nominee for South Carolina Teacher of the Year. A church musician for over 30 years, he currently directs the Chancel Choir at Eastminster Presbyterian Church.
